Apple has a number of reconditioned Performa 400 computers that they wish to sell through user groups. This Performa deal is an experimental arrangement between Apple and a few user groups. If it works out, more deals like this could happen in the future.
Please note that BMUG does not profit from the sale of these machines. All BMUG gets is improved relations with Apple, and the chance to get our members in on a good deal. This program is being completely run by volunteers, so we ask that you please be patient, and closely read and follow all instructions. Apple has said that they will return all forms that are not filled out completely, so it is important that you be thorough as possible as we jump through the right hoops. Only BMUG members may take advantage of this deal.
Instructions
If you want to buy a Performa system through this offer, please read and follow these instructions:
1) Obtain an official order form. Order forms may be obtained in the following ways:
a) pick one up at the BMUG office.
b) call the BMUG office at (510) 549-BMUG, EXT. 240. Leave an address or a fax number, and one will be mailed or faxed to you.
c) if you have an account on Planet BMUG, send email to Peter Linde requesting information and the form. It will be sent to on line. Print the form.
2) Read the form, and fill it out completely. Forms that are not filled out completely will not be sent on to Apple, and our efforts to contact to you about missing information will be limited.
3) After you have filled out the form completely (yes, I actually said it again ), total up your purchases. Please be advised that you are limited to 3 bundles, and that you must add the appropriate sales tax. (If you are ordering one (1) bundle #1, your total would be $1027.29; if you are buying one (1) bundle #2, your total would be $973.17 - but do the math yourself - it's good for you...)
4) You must pay by cashiers check. So go get one for the total amount of your purchase, and staple it to your order form. I will check your math, and if it is wrong, you won't be getting that computer anytime soon, so please make sure you did it all right.
5) Mail or bring your order form to the BMUG office:
BMUG/Apple Performa Deal
1442A Walnut St., #62
Berkeley, CA 94709-1496
Attn.: Peter Linde
5a) Please remember that I must submit your order to Apple by July 31st. Checks should be made out to Apple. That means it has to get to the BMUG office before that so that I have time to process it. If it arrives on July 31st at 4:30 p.m., only luck will process your order. Try to order as soon as possible.
6) Wait patiently. Shipping will be via UPS ground. Please allow two-three weeks for delivery.
What You Get
Through this offer, you can get a Performa 400 computer in the 4/80 configuration, with a color monitor. The computer comes with some bundled software (Claris Works).
What follows are excerpts from the communiqué sent to BMUG by Apple:
The Performa 400 machines in this offer are returns of a discontinued product. Some may have been lightly used, but all have been checked out and, when necessary, refurbished. They are covered by Apple's one year Limited Warranty, In-Home Service and unlimited toll-free help.
If you are unfamiliar with the Performa line, you will find the Performa 400 comparable to a Macintosh LCII. The Performa version of System 7 is pre-installed on the machines. You should instruct your members to use the back-up utility (diskette is included in the Performa box) to back-up their new Performa system. It should be noted that a ClarisWorks "starter" manual is included with the bundle.
Please note, quantities are very limited. We can only accept orders on a first-come, first-served basis and the offer expires July 31st
